What is Colostrum?

Colostrum is the foodstuff contained in the first milk mammals generate for the newborn. This foodstuff contains all the necessary ingredients for a newborn’s survival.

Nutritional Supplement Recommended Intake:

Take 2 capsules in the morning with a glass of spring water twenty minutes before a meal. Children over one take 1 capsule mixed with food (yoghurt) or liquid. If recovering from illness we would suggest taking two capsules twice a day.

It is important to drink plenty of Spring water and we recommend consuming at least one litre per day for best results.

Note: Although Colostrum is of Bovine extract it’s generally suited for those on non-dairy diets as lactose/dairy content is very minimal. Ask your healthcare provider if you’re unsure.

Store out of reach of young children. Food supplements must not be used as a substitute for a varied diet. Although we take great care in what we say about products on this site, you should always read the manufacturer's label on the actual product carefully before taking supplements.

What will Colostrum do for me?

Colostrum is good for virtually everybody. It may help and be beneficial to:

  • To boost the immune system

  • Reduce or prevent the symptoms of colds, flu and other infections

  • After or during illness, aid convalescence.

  • ‘leaky gut’

  • Digestive problems

  • Gingivitis (gum disease)

  • Athletes

  • Burning of fat and building of lean muscle mass

  • reducing the symptoms of ageing

  • reducing the symptoms of Depression

  • After surgery, accidents, cuts and burns (open capsule, mix with sterile water or a saline solution to form a paste. Apply directly to affected area. Bandage if needed. Reapply two to three times daily until healing is complete)

Colostrum is a source of nutrition that:

  • Contains all necessary immune factors, plus growth factors and a variety of vitamins and minerals

  • Can fight and remove bacterial invaders in the intestinal tract

  • Contains insulin-like growth factor IGF-1, associated with athletic endurance and fat burning

AquaSource Colostrum is from New Zealand cows which is far superior to any other Colostrum because New Zealand has the purest climate, and its pasture-fed cows are free of pesticides, antibiotics, and diseases like BSE and Foot-and-Mouth.

The processing methods used protect the nutritional integrity of the product. Clinically extracted under the most exacting of standards, AquaSource’s Colostrum contains all the vital constituents that make that initial foodstuff the primary nutritional source for the body’s immune system.

Colostrum is a food, not a drug or a medicine, but is a food that has evolved in the mammary world over eons to provide sustenance and protection during the very vulnerable early stages of a newborn’s life. In short, it transfers the inherent antibodies of the mother to the offspring.

AquaSource’s Colostrum is not sourced from just one cow, rather the nutritional factors and antibodies contained in it are taken from hundreds, sometimes thousands of cows.

Bovine Colostrum contains between 10-21 times more factors than human Colostrum and is the proven most stable source and method for the derivation of Colostrum.

Additionally Bovine Colostrum contains glycoproteins and trypsin inhibitors which ensures its immune and growth factors are not destroyed in the intestinal tract.

There have been numerous research papers published on the importance of antibodies in the battle against disease and the benefit of balanced growth factors for the body’s continued well-being.

Below is a breakdown of the factors contained in AquaSource’s Colostrum.

Immunoglobulins (antibodies)
These are broad spectrum defenders against bacteria and viruses. There are five classes of immunoglobulins found in all mammals, including humans. Colostrum contains all of them.

Lactoferin
An extremely powerful antiviral, antibacterial substance found only in bovine Colostrum.

Cytokines
These are responsible for cell to cell communications and regulate lymph activity, boost T-cell activity and play an integral role in the regulation of intensity and duration of immune responses. Cytokines are, in turn, composed of Interleukins that have various inhibitory properties.

Interleukin-10
This is a specific inhibitor of inflammation.

Proline-rich Polypeptide
This is the thymus gland’s regulating hormone. (Click here for information on this important gland)

Oligo Polysaccharides and Glycoconjugates
These are sugars which specifically bind to pathogenic (bacterial) invaders and as a result stop them permeating the intestines’ walls.

Epithelial Growth Factor (EGF)
Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF-1)
Transforming Growth Factors A & B (TGF A & B)
Growth Hormone (GH)

These growth factors aid the building of bone, muscle, nerves and tissues as well as balancing blood sugars.

Colostrum can be taken by young and old alike as well as athletes and sports people. It is also suitable for people recovering from illness. With the abundance of nutrients contained in it, Colostrum is an effective aid to any nutritional regime or daily supplementation and provides a foundation for physical health based on the ultimate blueprint: Nature.

Colostrum is often called pre-milk.  It's a thick, milk-like liquid produced by mammary glands, especially during the first two or three days after birth and before true lactation.

Colostrum contains Protein and Fat to nurture the infant.  In comparison to mature milk it contains more protein and less milk sugar and fat.

Its yellow colour reflects a high content of beta carotene

Colostrum provides maternal Antibody (IgA) and lymphocytes (white blood cells) to assist in protecting the infant's Gastro-intestinal Tract.  Some of the antibodies leak into the infant's bloodstream and provide additional protection from 'bugs'.

Colostrum provides Bifidus Factor, which helps beneficial bacteria populate the infant's intestinal infections, though the mother may have one.

Colostrum changes to transitional milk between the third and sixth day after birth. By the tenth day, the major changes in milk composition are complete.

Why bovine (cows) Colostrum?

Scientific research, conducted in the last decade in major medical research centres and universities throughout the world, has shown that bovine and human Colostrum are virtually identical.  Research has shown that bovine Colostrum can work in humans.

Why do I need Colostrum as an adult?

Research has shown that once we pass puberty, our bodies gradually produce less of the immune and growth factors that help our bodies fight off disease and heal damaged body tissue.  With the loss of these vital components, we age and die.  Colostrum is the only source of these life giving components . . . the actual immune factors and all of our body's growth factors (hormones) in perfect combination as nature intended.

What else can Colostrum do for me?

Colostrum contains IGF-1, the most powerful growth factor in our bodies. Medical Research has shown that supplementing with IGF-1 will help burn fat and build lean muscle mass. Remember that muscle weighs more than fat, so while you may not notice a change on the scale, you will see the difference in the way your clothes fit.

Colostrum is also anti-ageing. The body makes its own Growth Hormones, but at puberty this begins to slow down. By the age of 80 we are producing virtually no growth hormone. These hormones are necessary for the reproduction of virtually all of our body cells. Colostrum provides these hormones, so that ageing slows down.

Colostrum has been proven to improve mood during stress by stimulating the brain to release seretonin and dopamine and prolong their re-uptake.  Colostrum's powerful antibacterial factors have been shown to help prevent and great gum disease. Apply Colostrum directly to the gum area just before retiring.  Reapply nightly until better.  Colostrum has also been shown to help control any pain before or after dental work.

Colostrum has been shown to kill bacteria and viruses.

It stimulates tissue repair, particularly the bowel lining.

Colostrum stimulates fat utilization for fuel and so can help with weight-loss.

Colostrum optimises cellular reproduction (anti-ageing).

Should I take colostrum in tablet or capsule form?

It takes tremendous pressure (which creates high temperatures) to form a tablet.  When you apply this heat to Colostrum, you destroy the biological activity of Colostrum's immune and growth factors.  Some manufacturers choose this route either because they lack knowledge about Colostrum or because it is so much cheaper.  The goal is to have Colostrum reach the small intestine intact where it does its best work.  It is very important to take Colostrum capsules on an empty stomach with lots of water to aid its transit into the upper intestine.

How safe is Colostrum?

Colostrum is a food and can be consumed by most people without any side effects.  Colostrum has no known drug interactions.
People with milk protein allergies should be cautious when using Colostrum.  Pregnant or nursing women should consult their medical advisor prior to taking ANY supplements.  There is no known toxicity level with Colostrum.

How does Colostrum interact with other supplements or prescription medications?

Colostrum heals the bowel.  This means you get more nutrients from food you eat and supplements you take.  It also means you may absorb medication better.  You may need to take fewer nutritional supplements and medications may need to be re-evaluated for dose by your medical practitioner.

How much should I take?

Everyone is different.  Try starting with just one capsule a day for a few days, and build up to several capsules per day.  Some people may experience a 'healing incident' as the body releases toxins.  This can give temporary symptoms of digestive problems, skin eruptions, rashes or flu-like symptoms.  This is a good sign that it is working and usually wears off in a couple of days.  If you suffer any discomfort, just cut back on the Colostrum for a few days and then resume at a lower quantity, increasing your intake slowly as you reach optimum levels.

What if I'm pregnant or breast-feeding?

Ask your medical practitioner prior to taking any nutritional or herbal supplements, or prescription drugs.

Can I give my children Colostrum?

The immune factors may be very important in cases of lingering or recurring bacterial or viral infections, but it's always wise to consult your medical practitioner.

I don't like swallowing capsules. How can I take colostrum?

Colostrum works best if it is taken in capsule form, on an empty stomach with 8-12 ounces of water.  If you cannot swallow capsules, you may open the capsule and mix it with a few tablespoons of yoghurt, applesauce or other food.  Don't forget the water.  Do not take any other supplements with Colostrum and wait at least twenty minutes before you eat.

What about Mad Cow Disease?

No transmission of mad cow disease has ever been connected with the dairy industry, anywhere in the world.

What if I am lactose intolerant?

Most people with lactose intolerance do not experience a problem with Colostrum, as there is only a small amount of lactose present. If, however, you have a severe milk protein allergy, you should consult your doctor prior to taking Colostrum, due to its high protein count

Thymus Gland
The thymus gland is part of the Immune System that produces Hormones to support the development of the immune cells.

The thymus shrinks as people age. At birth thymic tissue represents O.4% of body weight. At the age of 70, the thymus accounts for only 0.0007%. This atrophy correlates with a gradual weakening of the immune system. Orally administered extracts of beef thymus and bovine colostrum have been used to support the function of the thymus gland. Antioxidants like Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Beta Carotene and Selenium are nutrients that enhance T-cell function and may retard thymic shrinkage because the gland is susceptible to oxidative damage. The amino acids Ornithine and Arginine can also stimulate the thymus gland. Zinc, Vitamin B6 and Vitamin C seem crucial to support thymic hormone production and cell-dependent immune function. Echinacea and licorice enhance immune function performed by the thymus gland. Thymic factors are being studied as therapeutic agents for Aids patients and cancer patients.

The thymic hormones include thymosin, thymic humoral factor, thymic factor and thymopoietin. Together they promote the proliferation and maturation of various types of T cells, lymphocytes (white blod cells) that help defend the body against foreign invaders. Helper T cells (which activate other lymphocytes), cytotoxic T cells (which attack cells) and suppressor T cells (which limit lymphocyte activity) represent the major class of T cells.
