When it comes to walking, it's all good

30,000 volunteer walk leaders are leading the way to healthier living, with Natural England's "Walking the Way to Health Initiative" (WHI)

All over the country there are now volunteer walking schemes, with many towns and communities boasting several different walking routes every week.

'You don't have to join a gym, you don't have to check your pulse. You just have to switch off the TV, get off the sofa and go for a walk.'

People are able to step out on walks across England and Wales, thanks to the dedication of the evergrowing numbers of WHI volunteers, who are helping people recovering from illness or injury, who want to lose weight, or those who just want to stay fit by getting out and about in the natural environment in the company of like-minded people.

“The walk is fantastic and I like the fact that it is every week.  There’s fabulous scenery and the leaders and other walkers are friendly and helpful.  I look forward to it every Wednesday.  And it’s all free!”  (Whitehawk Healthwalker)

“(The walks) have got me out as I was caring for my husband who has Alzheimers, also I have not been doing much walking so it is getting me fit.” (Sheepcote Healthwalker)

"The seafront route is really buggy friendly and my little girl Martha really enjoys the social aspect as there are always lots of people to smile at her! It's also really nice to find out bits of Brighton that we didn't know about before, where there is some open countryside and some greenery!"

(Seafront Healthwalker)

“Since I joined Healthwalks my blood pressure has come down and my diabetes has really improved.”  (Beryl, Portslade and Seafront Healthwalker)

“I’m divorced and retired, so it’s easy to just sit in all day watching the telly.  Going on a healthwalk gets me out of the house, meeting new people, and I always go and do something fun afterwards like go to the cinema.”  (Seafront Healthwalker)

“It is always a joy to meet and mix with people and already we feel that we are friends.  Sheila and I met on these walks and decided to go on holiday together this year – where she joined Joan and I and we had a lovely time on Hayling Island.”  (Gillian, Hove Park Healthwalker)

“Regular walking has improved my breathing, and I sleep better and feel better for the walk.”  (Whitehawk Healthwalker)

“It is nice that we have different generations – from babies to baldies! – on the walk.  It makes it really enjoyable.” (David, Seafront Healthwalker)

“Excellent.  Leader informative about area and careful to make allowances for varying abilities of others on the walk.” (Antony, Regular Healthwalker)

Health benefits of walking

Most of us see walking simply as a means to an end, a way of getting from A-B. What many people don't realise is that walking is also one of the most effective forms of all round exercises there is. It's also suitable and safe for pretty much anybody - regardless of age, fitness level or ability. Getting involved in regular walking can provide many amazing benefits and have a real impact on people's physical and mental health.

Did you know that walking can:

  • halve your risk of a heart attack or stroke?
  • burn the same amount of calories as jogging?
  • improve your blood pressure?
  • lower your cholesterol?
  • improve your confidence?
  • help you feel less stressed?
  • help you lose weight?
  • reduce the risk of some cancers?
  • help prevent Diabetes?

James Levine, M.D., Ph.D., and a Mayo Clinic expert on obesity, has this to say:

'Walking is good, whether the outcome measurement is blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, joint problems or mental health. Getting out there and taking a walk is what it's all about. You don't have to join a gym, you don't have to check your pulse. You just have to switch off the TV, get off the sofa and go for a walk.'
