is a common type of arthritis caused by excessive uric acid. It’s most
commonly located in the big toes, but also the rest of the foot or ankle, knee,
wrist, fingers and top of the ear. Gout mainly affects men over the age of 30 and is extremely painful. It is usually easily controlled by diet, elimination of alcohol, and slow
controlled weight loss if necessary. Nutrition facts & Diet Advice for Gout These nutrition guidelines should be considered:  | During an attack, eat only raw fruit (especially cherries, bilberries and other red-blue berries which neutralize uric acid and contain anthocyanoside antioxidants) and vegetables for two weeks, together with brown rice, millet, and other grains, as well as a small quantity of well-chewed nuts. | | Invest in a juicer and a book on juicing (see below) and have some every day, particularly diluted celery juice. After the acute phase is over, eat some protein every day but don’t overdo it. For a Champion Juicer as used by the Gerson Institute, click here. | | Drink at least 1½ litres of spring, distilled or filtered water every day, which will promote the excretion of uric acid and reduce the risk of kidney stones. | | Eliminate alcohol. | | Avoid caffeine (coffee, tea, cola, chocolate). | | Avoid organ meats, other meats, shellfish, brewer’s and baker’s yeast, herring, sardines, mussels, mackerel and anchovies. | | Reduce dried legumes, spinach, asparagus, fish, poultry, eggs and mushrooms. | | Avoid fried foods, roasted nuts or hydrogenated vegetable oil. | | Avoid white flour and sugar, and anything made from them. | | If you are overweight, aim to lose the excess pounds slowly (crash diets may increase uric acid levels). |
